FUEL SAVINGS
Using the reverser as an ejector, the EP-80 Ejector/TR augments thrust by increasing the mass flow exhausted, and reducing the total average velocity of the final exhaust flow. This unique function allows engine power reduction for equivalent thrust.
During (5) different flight tests, a consistent range of fuel savings was recorded. Two separate Performance Analysts reported fuel savings between 6-12% on all of these flight tests.Lower power setting translates directly into lower operating costs, not only from lower fuel burn, but also from lower engine operating temperatures. Hence, the term "hybrid" economy applies here as well as it does in the automotive industry. For example, an operator of a JT8D-219 equipped fleet can operate at JT8D-217 power setting levels and get -219 performance because of the thrust augmentation of this modification.
